FineCell to Showcase Cellulose Fibrils for Sustainable Battery Manufacturing at TBB2026

💡 Did you know that cellulose fibrils can also play a role in next-generation batteries?
FineCell is joining #TBB2026 The Business Booster 2026 by InnoEnergy in Munich this October, where we will showcase our cellulose fibrils as a bio-based, PFAS-free binder for lithium-ion battery electrodes.
In a recent project supported by the Swedish Energy Agency and carried out together with RISE, FineCell’s cellulose fibrils were evaluated as a binder for both graphite anodes and LFP cathodes.
Why is this interesting?
Conventional battery binders can be fossil-based. For example, PVDF is a fluorinated polymer associated with PFAS-related environmental concerns, while its processing typically requires NMP, a toxic organic solvent. Cellulose fibrils offer a bio-based alternative that can enable water-based electrode processing, potentially reducing reliance on fossil-based materials and hazardous solvents.
The project results showed that our cellulose fibrils could form stable electrodes and achieve electrochemical performance comparable to conventional binder systems in the tested configurations.
We’re excited about the results and now moving forward to validate the performance under larger-scale and longer-term conditions.
At TBB2026, we look forward to meeting industrial partners, potential customers and investors interested in scaling more sustainable battery technologies.
